Yellowstone Earthquake Swarm Continues (Updated)
Monday, December 29th, 2008The earthquake swarm continues in Yellowstone. The strongest earthquake has been upgraded to a magnatude 3.9. There have now been over 70 earthquakes in the region in the past 48 hours.
Prior to the initial event the seismograms showed normal activity. The preceding event shown on the chart above has a very unusual pattern. It may be a glitch, but it was followed by increased activity. Current activity is shown in the last section.
Initial Event Captured on Another Seismogram
Earthquake swarms often precede volcanic eruptions as the magma stresses the outer crust. They may also indicate subsidence, relief of pressure on the crust.
